Their Shadows Stood Behind Them

Is a collection of photographs of urinals in arts institutions from across the world, including art galleries, museums, theatres and arts education centres. The project takes the form of a digital archive, colouring book, zine and as cyanotype prints.

The project recognises the ongoing influence of Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain in contemporary art, and the unwavering stronghold of the patriarchy in the governance of arts structures and organisations. By exposing the urinals in a public display, the projects asks: who has access to these structures and what purpose do they still play?
